School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health at KTH

School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health (CBH) is one of the five schools of KTH and a strong constellation for research and education in the broader areas of health, environment, energy and materials. The School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health conducts research and education in areas that cover several global challenges. Among them are the need of sustainable energy, health and aging population, climate change, sustainable production and working life, food production and clean water.

Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab, http://www.scilifelab.se/) is a national center for large-scale life science research with an advanced technological infrastructure. At SciLifeLab, multidisciplinary research is carried out based on DNA sequencing, gene expression analysis, proteomics, bioinformatics, biostatistics and system biology. The goal is to enable Swedish researchers to analyze genes, transcripts and proteins in different organisms in order to map molecular mechanisms related to health and the environment. Examples of thematic research areas that are currently being processed within SciLifeLab are clinical genomics/proteomics, cancer genome and the genomics of complex diseases as well as ecological and environmental genomics.

Job description

The Spatial Proteomics National Facility is part of the newly established Single Cell and Spatial Biology Platform and part of the research infrastructure at SciLifeLab. The platform is organized into different units that offers single cell and spatial omics technologies for detection of DNA, RNA, proteins and small molecules in cells and tissue sections. The focus of the Spatial Proteomics unit Cell Profiling - SciLifeLab is to offer highly multiplexed immunofluorescence using state of the art protocols and equipment, currently with the CODEX platform.

The team consist of three people today, including the Head of Unit, and is now looking for a fourth member to scale up and further develop its activities. The team works closely with the research group of Prof Emma Lundberg, and share labs and office space with her group of approximately 15 people.

In the role as research engineer in the Spatial Proteomics unit you will be working both in the lab and in the office. As a national facility, much work will be to perform projects for external users, but the position also include internal research and development. Wet lab work involves sample preparation of fresh frozen (FF) as well as formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue sections, and to set-up instruments for image acquisition using fluorescence microscopy. Internal development projects can include optimizing and testing new protocols, conjugating and validating new antibodies for multiplexed immunofluorescence or developing integrated protocols together with other units of the Single Cell and Spatial Biology platform. Office work include image data processing and quality control, delivery of project reports and consultation with the users. Depending on the background and interest of the applicant, more time can be spent on image data analysis.
