School of Engineering Sciences at KTH

Job description

As part of a cross-departmental initiative, the department of Engineering Mechanics announces a postdoc position within the thematic area of Energy, Transport and Future Mobility on the topic of data-driven environmental assessment for land and air transport.

The environmental impact from transportation is of great concern due to the growing global demand for passenger mobility. Noise and pollutant emissions, as the two major environmental stressors contributing to the burden of disease in Western Europe, are key to the future of healthy, sustainable cities.

This project aims to support sustainable transport systems for healthier, smart cities by developing a multidisciplinary tool for the assessment of the cumulative environmental impact of noise and pollutant emissions from land and air transport. By merging the impact of noise and pollutant emissions from a multi-modal transport system perspective, this work will enable a refined assessment of the main contributors, leading to the implementation of truly optimal mitigation strategies. With the potential to address conflicting requirements for a sustainable transport system, such as improved traffic efficiency vs. reduced pollutant and noise emissions, the proposed project further contributes to the monitoring and definition of scenarios in the initiated transformation towards an electrified transport system.

The implementation of the tool will be based on deep-learning techniques for reconstructing dense data from sparse measurements, and for developing innovative approaches to sustainable development. The researcher will conduct numerical simulations of emissions and acoustic data, and will be responsible for developing the various deep-learning tools and models for pollutant emissions from land and air transport for a combined environmental assessment. Measurement-based input will also be used from areas close to Arlanda airport. This is a highly multidisciplinary project, where the researcher will closely interact with deep-learning experts within the Swedish e-Science Research Centre (SeRC), experts in acoustics from the Marcus Wallenberg Laboratory (MWL) and the ECO2 Research Center, and experts in sustainable aviation from the KTH Centre for Sustainable Aviation (CSA).

This position is one of eight postdoc positions in the thematic areas Biomechanics, Health and Biotechnology,

Advanced Material and Structures,

Energy, Transport and Future Mobility, and

Advanced Computing and Machine Learning.
