About the KTH MoveAbility Lab and research group: We are KTH’s first research environment for experimental research in human movement biomechanics, with focus on persons with and without disabilities. Our research goals are technology to decide, predict and enhance human movement. We are part of the Department of Engineering Mechanics, within the School of Engineering Sciences. We are located centrally at the KTH campus, and have close collaboration with a multidisciplinary network of technical and clinical scientists as well as health care professionals.
Job description
We seek a research engineer to join us at the KTH MoveAbility Lab, where we perform experimental analyses in human movement biomechanics. Specific duties for the successful candidate include:
Human movement capture and analysis in our lab, with 3D motion capture, force plates, pressure sensors, electromyography and metabolic cost measurements. This includes motion capture experimentation on able-bodied persons as well as on children and adults with motor disorders.
Prepare the lab for experiments, including placement and calibration of cameras, force plates and other sensors.
Assist faculty, researchers, PhD students and students with data collection, analysis, post-processing, compilation, illustration and presentation
Create and maintain/update a ‘normal’ database of human movement, i.e. gait and other daily activities, based on data collected in our lab
Create and maintain/update a database of walking and daily movements in people with movement disorders
Compile and analyze data from both individual data captures and from groups of subjects
Perform maintenance and updates on the lab’s software and hardware, including software and firmware updates. Also keep track of and order lab material and inventory.
Develop the lab’s methods and algorithms (including codes in Matlab and/or Python)
Construct small mechatronic equipment for movement analysis, such as triggers that synch several devices
Assist in construction of test rigs, for example surfaces or ramps instrumented with a force plate.

A graduate degree or an advanced level (higher education) relevant technical area, for example mechanical engineering, mechatronics, engineering physics, medical or biomedical engineering or equivalent competence.
Experience and skills. The right candidate must:
Have programming skills in Matlab and/or Python
Be able to learn and become an advanced user in the lab’s equipment and software
Be interested in human movement biomechanics, including research activities in this topic
Have good spoken and written skills in English and Swedish. Swedish language courses will be offered to non-Swedish speakers. The person must be able to communicate in Swedish (spoken and written) within one year.
Be sufficiently socially competent to communicate with and give instructions to people with disabilities
Have independence and drive to work on projects alone, even if senior researchers are not on site
Be able to work both independently and in a group/collaboration
Cope with simpler physical tasks, such as moving force plates or instrumented stairs

Preferred qualifications
Experience in human movement analysis or biomechanics
Experience in writing technical reports in English
Ability to speak and write in Swedish
Earlier experience in creating databases with search functions
Experience with construction of simpler mechatronic equipment, such as triggers that synch several systems or adapters/connectors for new equipment
Great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
