School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH

The Division of Decision and Control Systems belongs to the KTH School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The staff at the division consists of around 90 faculty members, postdocs, researchers, and doctoral students who contribute to a high professional standard of intensive work and quality results, as well as to a friendly and open environment. The staff has a multicultural background and the working language is English. The Division of Decision and Control Systems conducts fundamental research in networked control systems, machine learning, and secure control, among other areas. The division is internationally very well established, has many research collaborations with excellent partners worldwide, and is involved in several European and national projects. Industrial projects involve partners such as ABB, Ericsson, and Scania, and our academic network includes researchers at Caltech, MIT, UC Berkeley, Stanford, ETH, among others.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering

We are currently looking for 1-3 doctoral students with a very strong background and interest in control theory, mathematics, and machine learning. The successful candidates will work in projects on networked control systems focusing on reliability, cyber-security, and learning. We will develop new theories and methods for data-driven safe and cyber-secure control of critical infrastructures, such as water distribution, building management systems, transport systems, and smart electrical grids. The Ph.D. program in Electrical Engineering provides excellent quality education, including a large list of graduate courses ensuring an in-depth development of relevant competencies and skills.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

To be eligible for the postgraduate subject, and suitable for this position, applicants need to have passed a degree at advanced level in engineering physics, electrical engineering, computer science, or equivalent.

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal-oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

The successful applicants should have an outstanding academic track record, and very well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills. Good command of English orally and in writing is required to publish and present results at international conferences and in international journals.

A specialization in control systems or mathematics is an asset.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as doctoral students. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
