Third-cycle subject:Chemical engineering
Electrolysis processes, with electricity comes from renewable sources, enables fossil-free production of hydrogen gas and of other chemicals. However, more complex reactions and feedstocks increase the risk unwanted side reactions and often require precious electrocatalysts. The goal of this project is to introduce thin polymer coatings, of by-products from biorefineries, on the electrodes for enhanced selectivity, increased life-time and smarter cell designs. Systematic studies will be made to investigate transport of different species through polymer films synthesized in different ways and this will generate important understanding about the interplay between the chemistry and structure of the polymer and the electrochemical properties of the electrode. A long-term goal with the project, financed by the Swedish Energy Agency, is a more efficient production of hydrogen and oxygen.
The PhD student will work in the division of applied electrochemistry, with about 30 PhD students and seniors doing research on batteries, fuel cells and electrolytic processes, see more here. Research will be conducted in close collaboration with the division of polymer technology at KTH, see more here.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by the professors Ann Cornell and Minna Hakkarainen.
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
A suitable background is in the fields of chemical engineering, chemistry, polymer or material science or similar.
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
