School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health

Job description

The postdoctoral project aims to develop a new type of rechargeable zinc-ion batteries that enables a cost-efficient, sustainable, and effective solution for energy storage solutions. The zinc-ion battery relies on abundant, cheap, and non-toxic zinc and manganese dioxide materials and is compatible with existing cell recycling infrastructure. This technology can meet the cost and performance targets set by the EU for rechargeable batteries, while it addresses critical aspects regarding safety, environmental footprint, and scalability. The research project will be performed at Applied Electrochemistry KTH and is in close collaboration with the start-up battery company Enerpoly, the energy storage system company Polarium and Ångström Advanced Battery Centre at Uppsala University through the Swedish Energy Agency funded project “Demonstration of High-performance and Long-life Rechargeable Zinc-ion Batteries”.

The focus of the KTH part is to develop and optimize energy-dense and reversible novel manganese dioxide electrode materials for the positive electrode with long lifetime and evaluate these for rechargeable zinc-ion batteries. Insight into macro, meso and nano scale properties will be obtained by electrochemical characterization and other analytical techniques. The project will take advantage of accumulated expertise from lab-scale prototypes of zinc-ion batteries within the project group and make this technology ready for pre-commercialization stage.
