The PhD position is part of the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program on Humanities and Society (WASP-HS), which aims to realize excellent research and develop competence on the consequences and challenges of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems for humanity and society. This 10-year program is initiated and generously funded by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation (MMW) with 660 million SEK. In addition to this, the program receives support from collaborating industry and from participating universities. Major goals are more than 10 new faculty positions and more than 70 new PhDs. The WASP-HS graduate school provides foundations, perspectives, and state-of-the-art knowledge in the different disciplines taught by leading researchers in the field. Through an ambitious program with research visits, partner universities, and visiting lecturers, the graduate school actively supports forming a strong multi-disciplinary and international professional network between PhD students, researchers and practitioners in the field. It thus provides added value on top of the existing PhD programs at the partner universities, providing unique opportunities for students who are dedicated to achieving international research excellence with societal relevance.
The research is carried out in the project Culturally Informed Robots in Learning Activities aiming at using machine learning to improve the awareness and adaptation of educational robots to linguistic and cultural differences when interacting with learners from differing backgrounds. You will be part of a larger research group in machine learning for human speech, conversational AI and social robots at the Division of Speech, Music and Hearing. We also have a close collaboration with the Division of Robotics, Perception and Learning.

Other important personal qualities are openness to interdisciplinary research, creativity, accuracy, structured approach.
Expertise in machine learning/deep learning and good programming skills are strongly desirable. Experience and interest in areas like speech technology, robotics, natural language processing, linguistics, pedagogy and perception is also considered as asset.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
