The Department of Sustainable Development, Environmental Sciences and Engineering (SEED) conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of environmental issues, societal change and technological innovation, focused on developing more sustainable social systems.

The SEED department is hiring a PhD student for interdisciplinary research on environmental aspects of new building solutions using re-used materials to support the circular and resource efficient building sector of the future. The successful candidate will be part of the European Horizon 2020 project ReCreate that aims to develop new knowledge and business models for the re-use of concrete elements in new buildings. The project is inter-disciplinary and as a PhD student you will cooperate with researchers from different departments at KTH and three other universities in Europe. The research is also carried out in cooperation with actors from the Swedish building industry.
The PhD project will focus environmental assessment of circular building solutions in a life cycle perspective, including method development. The work also embraces studies of strategies to realize the environmental potentials of construction material re-use, in practice. This entails for example development of circular business models and studies on barriers to re-use of construction materials, of regulatory and social acceptance character.
The person we look for is expected to have a background in environmental or civil engineering specialized in environmental science, preferably combined with a competence in for example building and structural engineering, architectural design and or building and planning processes.

The PhD project further requires that you have an inter-disciplinary approach and interest, and preferably experience of both quantitative and qualitative research work. You are well familiar with tools for environmental systems analysis, like life cycle assessment. Experience of work with assessment of environmental aspects of circular building solutions, is seen as a merit.
For the projects you will work in, you need to be able to read and communicate to a certain extent in Swedish.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
