Third-cycle subject: Energy Technology
Citizen-driven energy communities (in Swedish MEGs) in cities can be an effective response to energy conversion challenges such as the integration of renewable energy sources and the management of new loads through the electrification of transport and the heating sector. The project studies MEG in a broad sense, where an important component is to propose future system solutions for how they can be realized in a sustainable and business oriented way for all stakeholders. The project aims to study and optimize solutions for energy communities from a technical and economic perspective with the help of scenarios that are then implemented and simulated in the co-simulation platform IntegrCity that KTH has created. This requires the development of new models in terms of technical infrastructure (electricity networks, heating networks, buildings, energy conversion technologies and batteries), economic cost structure, behavioral patterns and pricing structures for energy services. This development work will be the focus of the new doctoral student position. The project is carried out in collaboration with RISE, the City of Örebro, EON and ElectriCity through the Swedish Energy Agency's pilot project: "System change with locally shared energy - a socio-economically profitable model".
Supervision: The doctoral student will be placed at the Royal Institute of Technology and supervised by Prof. Björn Laumert (main supervisor) and Dr. Monika Topel (co-supervisor)
