The requirements on the Swedish and European steel industry to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions mean that blast furnace plants will be replaced with scrap-based steel production. This, in its turn, will lead to a lack of high-quality scrap which could be replaced with fossil-free direct reduced Iron-DRI process. Sweden has excellent conditions for producing fossil-free steel by combining established technology for the production of sponge iron from DRI with new technologies for gasification of biomass. By combining the DRI process with CCS a carbon sink, i.e. negative emissions are created.
In this Post- doc position, the scope of the work will be in developing the novel integrated system including biomass gasification, syngas conditioning, DRI process, EAF-Electrical Arc Furnace, and LF-Ladle furnace. Modelling and optimization of this developed system, making parameter- and with sensity studies. The position also includes co-operation with the industrial and academic partners, to make techno-economic and sustainability analysis.
