Third-cycle subject: Technology and Learning

Spatially Enhanced Learning Linked to STEM (SellSTEM) is an international research and training network funded by MSCA-ITN under H2020. It aims to find new ways to raise the spatial ability levels of boys and especially girls across Europe so they are better prepared for the cognitive demands of STEM education.  SellSTEM has 15 ESR positions spread across three work packages. The SellSTEM network consists of 10 universities and 8 non-academic partners in Europe.  SellSTEM will implement best practice in doctoral training through a carefully developed and comprehensive training programme and secondment of ESRs to different SellSTEM partners. Applicants should be highly motivated individuals holding a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Education, Psychology or any other relevant subject area with a strong background within the fields of education and interest for education development in primary/secondary school.  In line with the MSCA mobility rule, applicants must have resided in the country of the recruiting university, the Royal Institute of Technology, KTH, for less than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date (01 September 2021) and have not carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden– unless as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention.  Candidates must also be in the early stage of their research career, defined as having spent less than 4 years (full time equivalent) in a research position since graduating from a degree required for entry to doctoral education, and have not been awarded a PhD.  The successful candidate must be available to start on September 1, 2021 and be prepared to spend several months on secondment to another country in Europe.

The doctoral student will be placed within the research group LEEAP, which is part of the department of Learning in Engineering Sciences at KTH. Supervisors will be Docent Lena Gumaelius and Doctor Jeff Buckley.

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
