Addressing climate change is a matter of urgency. A global warming of 1.5oC will have serious consequences, and these will increase considerably at a warming of 2oC (IPCC, 2018). At the same time, the commitments that different countries have made so far lead to a warming of at least 3°C during this century and then continued warming (UNEP, 2020). If the emission reductions are not achieved with sufficient speed, there is a risk that the climate system passes a threshold value and the temperature increases become self-reinforcing (Steffen et al, 2018). The coming decade will therefore be crucial for making knowledge-based decisions and initiating actions. To that end, we need integrated research to obtain and communicate the knowledge necessary for taking meaningful actions. And action has to be taken by all societal actors; the research community, business, policymakers and not least the general public.
To support addressing these global challenges, the newly funded KTH Climate Action Centre is a highly collaborative, research-focused and unbiased center uniting changes in technology, policy and society with:
The team of two research assistants will join the vibrant new center and aid its startup phase with a variety of activities. The first task for the students will be to support the center directorship in mapping the key players and research outputs on climate action research at KTH and in the Stockholm region. Furthermore, the teaching assistants will support the engagement of KTH students on a climate theme, including being involved in the organization of a KTH-wide student competition for addressing specific climate issues. Finally, the students will be involved in the media outreach strategy and in the communication efforts of the center. This will include working on the social media outreach for the center, and in the creation of new material to engage students and the general public with the climate action challenge.
