Third-cycle subject: Biotechnology, specialization medical protein technology
The division of protein engineering is looking for a highly motivated Ph.D.-student to work with cutting edge methods for design and engineering of small scaffold affinity proteins for medical applications.
Affibody molecules are folded and small scaffold affinity proteins, which can be generated to interact specifically with desired targets with high affinity. Recent research at the division has shown that they can be functionalized with potent cytotoxic drugs, and can be used to efficiently treat cancer tumors in animal models. The aim now is to take the research to the next level and engineer new variants to target novel cancer types, with optimized cytotoxicity, and with minimal damage to non-tumor cells, and investigate their properties in vitro and in animal models.
The student will work with engineering and design of proteins for medical applications, with a focus on drug conjugates for cancer therapy. More specifically the student will learn phage- and cell-display based selection of affinity proteins from combinatorial libraries, rational design of proteins, protein production and purification, protein analysis using a number of state-of-the-art techniques, and derivatization with different small organic molecules. In collaboration with other groups in Sweden and internationally as well as small biotech companies, studies of the function of the designed proteins and drug conjugates will be conducted.
