School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Design and control of flexible power electronics for wind power balancing using electrolyzers

Wind power has grown strongly in recent years and is expected to continue to increase significantly. But it also poses high stress on the power balance of the grid due to the stochastic and uncertain characteristics of wind power. On the demand side, there is a strong trend with significantly more hydrogen electrolysis in mainly the mining and steel industry. Therefore, using surplus wind power to produce green hydrogen is a promising solution to support large industry demand, and electrolyzers can provide system services for wind power integration. In this process, power electronic interface is a key enabler for balancing and utilization of wind power. This project will develop power electronic interfaces and suitable control/optimization mechanisms for electrolyzers to provide efficient system services for wind power integration.

Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by: Ass. Prof Qianwen Xu and Professor Lennart Söder
