Environmental Geology

Subject description

The subject covers geology and geological processes in soil and rock, but also structural geology, tectonics, and geophysics. The subject also includes the combination of several mainly recent and exogenous geosciences of importance for construction, water supply, land-use planning, and the utilization of geological resources in society.

Duties

The work primarily includes teaching at the bachelor level and participation in teaching teams at the master level, which may also include participation in research, to some extent. The teaching involves planning (including scheduling, staffing, designing examination, and managing course web), coordinating, and running courses (e.g. lectures, seminars, study visits, assessing/grading, supervision of bachelor and master degree projects and course administration) in the subject area and in close collaboration with other staff. Teaching at the bachelor level is conducted mainly in Swedish.

Teaching also includes field studies, excursions, and laboratory work in hydrogeology/geology, including geophysical surveys, at both bachelor and master levels. Teaching at the master level is conducted in English and focuses mainly on Swedish geology and geophysical surveys for technical applications. Initiating and developing new activities within education (e.g. through collaboration with other schools and programs at KTH) may also be needed. Duties may also include responsibilities as Programme coordinator and/or Director of studies.

 

Eligibility

Those qualified for appointment as a lecturer are persons who have:

  • 1) been awarded a degree from first-cycle academic education within the subject of the employment or has corresponding competence,
  • 2) professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties it will involve, and
  • 3) demonstrated teaching expertise.

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as lecturer at KTH are stated in KTH's appointment procedure, section 1.5, and apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is that the applicant has

  • documented pedagogic competence, including the ability to lecture to groups of different sizes and supervise students in projects and degree projects. The assessment of teaching expertise shall also relate to the person’s long-term ability to develop as a teacher.
  • documented subject expertise and overview within the subject relevant to the content of the employment, including knowledge and field experiences from Swedish geology, the properties of geological materials, the exploitation of geological resources in the society, and geophysical methods.

Of second highest importance that the applicant has

  • expertise to develop and lead activities and interpersonal skills. This includes knowledge of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality.
  • the ability to pursue third-stream activities.

It is also important that the applicant has

  • documented professional expertise relevant to the content of the employment.
  • expertise in respect of development work within the area.
  • courses in teaching and learning in higher education.
  • doctoral degree in an area relevant to the teaching.
