KTH, School of Industrial Engineering and Management

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Materials Science and Engineering

Graphite is widely used in process industries, E-mobility and digitation. Its consumption is increased rapidly due to the increasing production of lithium-ion batteries globally. Especially the graphite demand in Swedish metallurgical industries is going to increase due to the fossil-free steel production, which EAF-Electrical Arc-Furnace process is increased. Today all used graphite comes from natural graphite mines or fossil-based artificial production.  The main scope of this position is to develop a low-energy consumption and a low-CO2-emissions, a high resource efficiency process to produce fossil-free graphite, which can be used for electrodes in EAF and anodes in battery application. In this position, the work starts from screening the catalysts for graphitization of biochar, then optimization of the process parameters will be further conducted, Final, a process from biomass to graphite shall be developed.

Supervision: Weihong Yang, Docent, is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
