KTH Royal Institute of Technology, EECS

Job description
The use of antenna arrays is at the core of the fifth-generation (5G) wireless communication technology. By using boxes with many individually controllable antennas, the wireless signals can be directed at the users, so that more signal energy is reaching them. In addition, several users can receive data simultaneously and be separated in the spatial dimension, instead of in time and frequency as in traditional systems. In these ways, wireless technology becomes more spectral and energy efficient. Multi-antenna communications are here to stay, but how will technology evolve beyond 5G?

In this project, you will develop theory and algorithms for communications and sensing that have the potential to revolutionize multi-antenna systems. Three examples are user-centric “cell-free” distributed antenna systems, physically large and dense antenna surfaces (holographic MIMO), and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces. The research will be theory-driven and focus on establishing the fundamental performance limits of one or more of these new concepts, as well as developing effective signal processing algorithms and protocols to approach these limits in practical contexts.

The research is funded by a Swedish Research Council project awarded to Emil Björnson (IEEE Fellow). The following video gives a deeper background to the project: https://youtu.be/chmZ8cdyTMc

What we offer

  • A position at a leading technical university that generates knowledge and skills for a sustainable future.
  • Engaged and ambitious colleagues along with a creative, international and dynamic working environment.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Research proficiency proven by publishing at least three articles in scientific journals that belong to the top tier in your field.
  • Good knowledge of the English language, both orally and in writing.

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline.
  • We also consider applicants that anticipate obtaining their doctoral degree within the next six months, but the degree must be received before the employment decision can be made.
  • We are looking for a motivated researcher with good collaboration skills who can work independently, but also contribute to the research group with new knowledge and be a role model for the doctoral students. Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills are a requirement, as is teamwork abilities.
  • Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities and personal suitability. The research is expected to use methodology from signal processing, communication theory, wave propagation, and machine learning. Documented experience of conducting research in these areas is commendable, particularly by having published at least three scientific articles in top-tier scientific journals (e.g., IEEE transactions).
  • For KTH and the research group, awareness of diversity, gender equality, and equal treatment issues are important.

  1. CV including relevant professional experience and knowledge.
  2. Copy of diplomas and grades from your previous university studies. Translations into English or Swedish if the original documents have not been issued in any of these languages.
  3. A brief account of why you want to conduct research, your academic interests within the scope of the research project, and how they relate to your previous studies and future goals. Max two pages long.
  4. A list of your five most meritorious scientific articles. For each article, you must briefly explain in what way your article proves your scientific skills and what you contributed to the article. At least three of the articles must be published in scientific journals belonging to the top tier of your field (see the list of requirements above).

Your complete application must be received by KTH no later than the last day of application, midnight CEST (Central European Summer Time).

About the employment

The position offered is for, at the most, three years.

A position as a postdoctoral fellow is a time-limited qualified appointment focusing mainly on research, intended as a first career step after a dissertation.
