Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering
The occasional appearance of auroral arcs far poleward of the latitudes where the aurora usually occurs, gives us a hint on the complicated coupling processes between the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetosphere during quiet geomagnetic times. The textbook picture of the auroral oval encircling a region void of aurora, which is directly coupled to the solar wind through open magnetic field lines, does not hold during such times. Thanks to a new generation of UV imagers, a new picture has emerged. It became clear that instead of one bright transpolar arc, sometimes the entire region poleward of the auroral oval fills with weak auroral arcs.
The main focus of this PhD project is on the question of why and how such multiple polar auroral arcs emerge. The multiple polar auroral arcs will be studied with help the low-orbiting DMSP satellites and ground-based instruments providing 2D-maps of plasma flows and field-aligned currents in the auroral region (DMSP, AMPERE). Furthermore, the focus will be on changes in the magnetospheric topology during such events. For this, data from magnetosphere satellite missions such as Cluster and MMS are used.
