Project description

Third-cycle subject:  Biotechnology

We are looking for one PhD student to work on data analysis of the protein biomarkers in blood to study the states of health. The doctoral student will work on data generated by highly multiplexed analysis methods of human blood samples that originate from different patient cohorts, such as breast cancer. The task is to develop bioinformatics pipelines for data analysis, integrate multiple layers of data, and establish interfaces for data interpretation and visualization.

This work will be performed under the supervision of Prof. Jochen Schwenk and the co-supervision of Assistant Prof. Stefan Bauer. The work will be conducted at the Division of Affinity Proteomics in close collaboration with the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP), and the Human Protein Atlas project (www.proteinatlas.org). The student will interact with an interdisciplinary environment of research engineers, PhD students, postdocs, and researchers. The placement will be at Science for Life Laboratory, a national center for molecular biosciences with a focus on health and environmental research.

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree),
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

Eligibility

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a degree at advanced level,
  • Completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
  • in any other way acquired within or outside the country acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

  • Experience with computational tools for data analysis, visualization, and software such as R or Python is meriting.

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work,
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.
  • good communication skills in English (oral and written) and
  • experience with affinity proteomics data from the analysis of blood.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
