School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health at KTH

Job description

Scandium is classified as a critical raw material in EU due to its increased applicability and limited supply. Scandium is often grouped among the rare earth elements as it shares many characteristics with yttrium. Scandium is a key component in several green technologies such as solid oxide fuel cells and for high strength lightweight aluminum alloys used in aerospace and other important applications in electronics, lighting and ceramics. The scandium adoption in the aviation industry is expected to increase significantly calling for increased efforts in securing a stable scandium supply. Due to the scarcity of scandium-rich ores, it becomes attractive to recover scandium from waste streams of other mining and metallurgical industries.

This position is part of a European collaboration project focusing on recovery of scandium from bauxite residues from the alumina industry. An innovative process for Sc refining will be optimized in close collaboration with industry. The postdoctoral candidate at KTH will focus on developing a sustainable process for crystallization of a scandium salt of high quality. The research project focuses on developing both the fundamental science and industrial applicability.

We seek a candidate with a background in chemical engineering or hydrometallurgy, having expertise in crystallization/ precipitation and with the ability to apply this knowledge to develop industrially applicable processes. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to be able to work both independently and together with colleagues who collaborate in the project from industry and academia in Europe.

This position is a full-time position for two years. Start date is open for discussion, but we would like to see the position filled as soon as possible. The project is funded by EIT Raw Materials.
