School of Engineering Sciences at KTH

Job description

Despite significant advancements in targeted or immune therapies, the survival rate of lung cancer continues to be low. This is largely a consequence of intrinsic or acquired resistance to a given treatment calling for a different treatment or medication approach. Thus, monitoring treatment responses by non-invasive methods, i.e. following the tumour in liquid biopsies, can significantly improve the outcome by providing the necessary feedback to the clinical decision point. During the past decade, tumour-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) or exosomes have emerged as a potent source of such biomarkers. This project aims to validate a novel microchip-based technology for such analyses using clinical samples. The project also aims to improve the diagnostic precision by developing more accurate biomarkers through the analyses of individual exosomes by a state-of-the-art multiparametric single-exosome technology. The success of the project will lead to a general-purpose diagnostic and treatment monitoring platform applicable to different cancer types. Of the cross-disciplinary nature, the research requires close collaboration with oncologist, pathologists as well as expert from biotechnology and surface chemistry.
