Job description

The postdoc is expected to participate in the on-going project HARMONIA, conduct high-quality research on remote sensing for various applications, including urban mapping, urbanization monitoring, disaster management and decision support, environmental change monitoring and impact assessment, writing scientific papers, co-supervise PhD students, and participate in teaching of courses in remote sensing, image processing and applications. 

Funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program, the HARMONIA project aims to develop a decision support system for improved resilience and sustainability in urban areas to cope with climate change and extreme events. Specifically, HARMONIA will focus on two types of Climate Change (CC) effects:

  • Natural and manmade hazards intensified by CC, including urban flooding, land degradation and geohazards (landslides, earthquake, ground deformation)
  • Manmade hazards, such as urban heat islands, air quality, greenhouse gas emissions.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • PhD exam in natural science and engineering disciplines such as geomatics engineering, geography, computer science, electrical engineering. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Strong knowledge in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and/or optical remote sensing
  • Demonstrated skills in SAR and/or optical time series analysis, change detection
  • Experience in cloud processing platform (e. g. GCP and GEE) for exploitation of EO big data
  • Demonstrated ability to write and publish scientific papers.
  • To succeed in the role, you are independent in your professional role and have a good ability to work with both internal and external contacts.
  • You have an interest in diversity and equal treatment issues with a special focus on gender equality

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • Scientific skill
  • Pedagogical experience from teaching as well as work with dissemination of research results and that it is useful. It is also an advantage to have experience of developing and leading operations and personnel.

About the employment

The position offered is for, at the most, two years.

A position as a postdoctoral fellow is a time-limited qualified appointment focusing mainly on research, intended as a first career step after a dissertation.
