Third-cycle subject: Medical Technology
We are looking for a motivated person with a great interest in medical technology development and research to work in an interdisciplinary research environment at KTH and KI, with close links to Karolinska University Hospital. The doctoral position is advertised as part of the joint KI-KTH doctoral program in Medical Technology. This means that the doctoral student will be admitted to the third-cycle education at both universities and will then have the opportunity to apply for a joint doctoral degree. The home university and the main workplace of the doctoral student will be KTH - Department of Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems.
We are conducting research in the field of biomechanical imaging and modelling to improve diagnostic and treatment procedures and prevent various types of injuries and diseases. This project aims to develop new imaging and modelling tools to improve safety for both the fetus and the mother during vacuum-assisted births. Evidence suggests that the woman is at higher risk for pelvic floor muscle injury when a vacuum cup is used. The risk to the baby is low, but depends on how difficult the delivery becomes. Cases of brain damage in the baby occur in up to about 2%. More knowledge is needed about how to use the vacuum extractor safely, as well as reliable methods to evaluate vacuum-assisted delivery. In the project, we will develop methods to study possible effects on the fetal brain and ultrasound elastography to improve the assessment of maternal pelvic floor muscle injuries after vacuum-assisted delivery. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by Professor Matilda Larsson (KTH), Docent Gunilla Ajne (KI), PhD Lotta Herling (KI), and Associate Professor Xiaogai Li (KTH).
