School of Engineering Sciences at KTH

Job description

The project focuses on developing optimization methods and algorithms with applications in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). Specifically, we want to develop mixed-integer optimization-based methods for ML/AI, e.g., for robust verification and training DNNs. The project is a part of the larger project ”AI techniques for Power Systems Under Cyberattacks” which is financed by https://c3.ai/dti/research/2022-projects/ and is a collaboration between KTH, UC Berkeley and Caltech.

The position is at the Department of Mathematics in the Division of Optimization and Systems Theory. The project at KTH is led by Assistant Professor Jan Kronqvist.

What we offer

  • A position at a leading technical university that generates knowledge and skills for a sustainable future
  • Engaged and ambitious colleagues along with a creative, international and dynamic working environment
  • Works in Stockholm, in close proximity to nature
  • Work in a creative environment to find new innovative solutions by developing fundamental optimization techniques.
  • Help to relocate and be settled in Sweden and at KTH

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • You are expected to have a strong knowledge of mathematical programming, and have experience in either linear or nonlinear programming. Preferably you also have experience in mixed-integer optimization. You need to have published journal/conference papers with a focus on optimization (theory, methods, or applications).
  • Experience of working with Python.
  • Proof of research expertise, for example published papers in good journals and peer-reviewed conferences.
  • Ability to collaborate with others and work independently.

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  •  Experience/knowledge of one or several of the topics: mixed-integer optimization, robust optimization, convex optimization, ML/AI, bilevel optimization, optimization software, Git.
  • Teaching abilities
  • Experience of working with ML/AI algorithms and tools, e.g., PyTorch.
  • Previous experience of method/algorithm development for optimization applications.
  • Experience of presenting results at international conferences.
  • You should have good analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skill. The research focuses on methods and theory, but you need to have sufficient knowledge/skills in programming (mainly Python).

As person you have a strong ability to work independently and successfully collaborate with others. We expect the application to have an awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal competency
