The Department of Sustainable Development, Environmental Science and Engineering (SEED) conducts research and education focused on the sustainable development of society. SEED gathers a broad range of interdisciplinary expertise to conduct research that covers a wide field within environmental, engineering and sustainability issues.

Job description

The appointee will develop and use a variety of quantitative tools and approaches for investigating the impact of different water management strategies in the context of hydroclimatic extreme events, both regionally and globally. A core focus is to develop models and methodologies to better understand hydrological processes at different scales, in order to respond more efficiently to emerging water issues related to extreme events. It is essential for the applicant to have solid theoretical and applied background in big data analysis and large-scale water systems modeling, remote sensing and machine learning.

The candidate is expected to produce high-quality scientific papers, suitable for publication in high profile journals and presentations at national and international conferences, and contribute for external funding proposals.

Qualifications

Requirements

• A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.

The applicant is required to demonstrate:

• a strong background in computational hydrology focused on extreme events
• programming skills, hydrological modeling, remote sensing, machine learning and spatial data analysis
• a publication track record that clearly reflects the ability to conduct and publish research in the field of hydrology, remote sensing, extreme events, and/or climate change;
• excellent written and verbal communication skills in English since it is required in the daily work;
• the ability to represent the research group internally and externally for instance at national and international conferences and workshops

Preferred qualifications

• A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
• Experience from developing methods and tools for applicable analysis of hydroclimatic extreme events, remote sensing, machine learning, big data analysis and water management tools
• Ability to work independently but also the ability to collaborate in a team 
• Teaching abilities
• Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality

About the employment

The position offered is for, at the most, two years.

A position as a postdoctoral fellow is a time-limited qualified appointment focusing mainly on research, intended as a first career step after a dissertation.
