Subject description

The subject is accelerator-based experimental particle physics.

Duties

The associate professor is expected to conduct research within the subject area at the ATLAS experiment at CERN. This includes contributing to the operation of the detector and to develop new particle detectors, as well as actively applying for research grants.

Included in the employment are duties in developing and carrying out teaching in the subject field at basic, advanced and doctoral levels, which also includes supervision of bachelor, master, and PhD students. Certain administrative tasks are part of the duties, as is participation in exchange of knowledge with society at large and to contribute to the academic environment. The associate professor is expected to be able to teach in Swedish within three years. If necessary, a language course plan is established at the time of appointment.

Eligibility

Those qualified for appointment as an associate professor are persons who have:

  1. been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve, and
  2. demonstrated teaching expertise. 

Grounds of assessment

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor at KTH shall be the degree of expertise required as a qualification for employment. In addition, the assessment criteria stated in the KTH appointments procedure, section 1.2., apply in relation to the employment profile laid down.

Of highest importance is that the applicant has 

  • research expertise in the subject field
  • teaching skills in the subject field

Of second highest importance is that the applicant has

  • the ability to pursue outreach activities and also provide information about research and development work.
  • interpersonal skills

It is also important that the applicant has

  •  expertise to develop and lead activities and staff. This includes knowledge of diversity and equal treatment issues with a particular focus on gender equality.
  • administrative expertise
