System identification, or learning of dynamical models, treats how to construct models of dynamical systems based on sensor information. The area is multidisciplinary, involving mathematical statistics, machine learning, and systems and control theory. The methods are in widespread use in many application domains such as biotechnology, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering.
Disturbances affecting the measurements is a fundamental problem as they can severely deteriorate the accuracy of the model. While there exists algorithms that can minimize the impact in an optimal way, they are computationally very expensive, especially for non-linear dynamical models.
The aim in this project is to develop less computationally demanding algorithms, which have only marginally worse accuracy compared to the optimal ones. These algorithms should also be robust, meaning that they should be less sensitive to non-ideal settings and require less a prior information. Statistical analysis of the theoretical properties of the developed algorithms is an important ingredient of the project. The project offers rich possibilities to explore the intersection between control theory, mathematical statistics and machine learning for theoretically inclined PhD students.

Supervision: The project is financed by the Swedish Research Council and it is planned that Prof. Håkan Hjalmarsson will be main supervisor.
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
Admission to third-cycle studies in Electrical Engineering requires the applicant to have completed courses equivalent to at least 120 higher education credits from second-cycle studies or higher in the subject Electrical Engineering or other subjects deemed directly relevant to the specialization in question. These requirements will also be considered fulfilled by applicants who have acquired the equivalent knowledge through other means. Normally, a master’s degree in the relevant research domain fulfills these requirements.

The successful candidates will hold a Master of Science (or equivalent, e.g. Civilingenjör in Sweden) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering Physics, Engineering Mathematics, or Mechanical Engineering, with a profile in Control Theory, Signal Processing, Robotics or Machine Learning.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
