Third-cycle subject: Transport science
Research and education in planning of railway systems is conducted at the Division of Transport Planning. The aim is to improve the conditions for the railway and the competitiveness of freight and passenger rail transport to contribute to a sustainable development of the society. We are looking for a doctoral student who is interested in applying quantitative methods to explore the potentials of High-Speed Rail (HSR) and flight services in Sweden for domestic and international travel.
In recent years, a growing number of researchers and practitioners have moved away from merely analysing the competition between HSR and air to viewing the HSR-air relation from an integration perspective. An integrated HSR-air service can be defined as one single complete journey with a fast and seamless change between modes of transport. Different solutions for the integration of HSR and air transport could be implemented, ranging from very basic integration to more sophisticated systems that include luggage integration, booking/fare integration, etc.
The doctoral student is expected to explore the potentials (demand and passenger valuations, social benefits, etc.) of HSR-air integration (and maybe further HSR-X integration) for international and domestic travels in Sweden by applying different quantitative methods with a particular focus on discrete choice models. The results can be used to infer policy conclusions about the real attractiveness of the HSR-Air integrated alternative for domestic and international travel in Sweden.
Supervision: Associate professor Oskar Fröidh and postdoctoral researcher Mohammad Maghrour Zefreh are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.
