School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Chemical Science and Engineering

In this PhD position, the doctoral student is expected to develop proof-of-concept for technologies to remove-non-CO2 greenhouses at dilute concentrations in air. The student will also contribute to ongoing research activity at KTH with regards to greenhouse gas removal from atmosphere. This work is part of a larger project that aims to (i) develop proof-of-concept (Technology Readiness Level 3-4) for technologies to remove CH4 (and possibly N2O) from dilute (<1 %-vol) non-fossil sources and evaluate its impact on the environment (ii) identify the plausibility of upscaling the technologies in real conditions considering technological, environmental, economic, social and policy compatibility. The project is led by KTH and is in collaboration with several organizations (in academia, research, industry and associations) in Europe.

The doctoral student will mainly focus on carrying out experimental research to develop proof-of-concept for envisioned technologies to remove non-CO2 greenhouse gases like CH4 and N2O at very low concentrations (<1%-vol). The focus is on catalytic conversion of these gases with a possibility of integrating it with direct air capture of CO2. This study will identify suitable catalyst and reactor configuration and establishing thermodynamic and kinetic data. The doctoral student will be placed in the Division of Energy Processes, and will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with researchers spread across Europe.

Supervision: Shareq Mohd Nazir (Assistant Professor), Klas Engvall (Professor) and Efthymios Kantarelis (Associate Professor)  is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
