Job description

The division of Energy Systems (dES), within the Department of Energy Technology at KTH, has been awarded funding as part of the Horizon Europe project IAM COMPACT. The project aims to support the achievement of global climate goals and the design of the next round of NDCs for major emitters and non-high-income countries. One Work Package of the project is dedicated to developing technical capacity and promoting ownership in integrated assessment modelling in non-high-income countries and is led by KTH.

As a Postdoc you will:

  • Formally lead the task of the project related to the ‘Expansion and development of technical and institutional capacity in the pilot countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Ukraine). This involves coordinating all the project partners contributing to the task; reporting to the work package leader and the coordinator on the status of the activities; keeping the schedule of the activities
  • Carry out capacity development activities in the pilot countries on integrated assessment modelling in support of NDCs. This may be done using, among others, integrated resource assessment frameworks developed and used at the division of Energy Systems, (e.g. the Climate, Land, Energy, Water Systems – CLEWs – framework), and modelling tools currently used at the division (e.g. OSeMOSYS, LEAP, MESSAGE, WEAP, GAEZ). Other tools and methods can be considered
  • Participate in integrated assessment modelling activities in the pilot countries
  • Assist the Principal Investigator of the project on KTH side and the Work Package leader in the management of the related activities within the project
  • Participate in a broader range of research activities aimed at the development of knowledge, research methods, tools, applications and datasets for integrated resource assessment at the division of Energy Systems
  • Publish scientific papers
  • Assist in the supervision of Master and PhD students in the division
  • Participate in teaching, division and department tasks

Qualifications

Requirements

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in energy and integrated assessment modelling. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made
  • Experience in integrated assessment modelling and capacity development in developing contexts
  • Research expertise in the Nexus science and different methods for Nexus assessments
  • Teaching skills for capacity development in different cultural contexts
  • Experience in leading stakeholder dialogues and research work in energy and integrated resource assessment and planning
  • You are independent in your research and work in integrated resource assessment, modelling and planning

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • Experience in the CLEWs framework and with modelling tools such as LEAP, MESSAGE, OSeMOSYS, WEAP and AEZ among others
  • Willingness to bring to the division new research ideas for integrated resource assessment research and capacity building
  • You are willing and able to work in teams, both within the division and in international contexts
  • You are interested in creating impact towards sustainable development
  • Proficiency in other European languages besides English and Swedish
  • Knowledge and awareness about gender equality and equal treatment

About the employment

The position offered is for, at the most, two years.
