Third-cycle subject: Chemistry, within the doctoral program Chemical Science and Engineering

The position will be connected to the EU financed project RADOV, which has the overall goal to extract bioactive peptides from egg proteins, and to incorporate these in advanced functional products. The specific part of the research project associated with this position regards irradiation of the proteins in order to obtain peptide fragments for further biological investigation and treatment. An important part of this work consists of analysis and characterization of the formed peptides using separation techniques like chromatography and capillary electrophoresis, and mass spectrometric techniques like ESI-MS and MALDI-MS. This includes development of analytical methodology and sample preparation. Both theoretical and practical work will occur, but emphasis will be on the experimental performance. Collaboration with other sub-projects within RADOV will be an important part of the work. The accomplished work must meet the demands of RADOV regarding practical goals, reports, and publication.

The position will be placed within the division of Applied Physical Chemistry in the groups of analytical chemistry and nuclear chemistry.

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

• passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
• completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits in the subject Chemistry, or other subjects assessed as directly relevant for the specific research area, or
• acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

• independently pursue his or her work
• collaborate with others,
• have a professional approach and
• analyse and work with complex issues
• Laborative skills are of highest importance for the work.
• It is preferred that you have experience of development and performance of work with the above-mentioned analytical techniques.
• Knowledge in radiation chemistry and radical chemistry is a merit.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
