Third-cycle subject: Structural Engineering and Bridges
Construction of new and restauration of existing railway lines for higher train speeds demands bridges built with minimized environmental impact. This motivates studies of new design and construction solutions contributing to reduced resource consumption and reduced emissions. The development of fossil free steel has reached far and steel bridges can be made lighter than conventional concrete bridges, which gives positive effects such as reduced transport volumes, easier construction, and less complex foundation arrangements. Further environmental benefits can be attained if weathering steel is used, which do not have to be surface treated and painted over the intended service life.
A light steel bridge has properties that may cause problems with dynamic effects of passing trains, fatigue of welded connections, and noise emission. To enable a large-scale construction of steel bridges for high speed railways, these problems need to be analysed and solutions developed. The aim of the project is increased knowledge on bridges for high speed railways and optimization for minimized environmental impact. The work will include fundamental studies in railway bridge dynamics, material behaviour of weathering steel in high strength, fatigue, and noise emission. Moreover, these complications should be studied for a number of conceptual bridge solutions with steel as the main load bearing material.
Supervision: John Leander is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
The candidate should have a degree in civil engineering with a solid background in mathematics, computational mechanics and structural dynamics.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
