Third-cycle subject: Vehicle and Maritime Engineering
The research studies are part of KTH Naval Architecture's ship dynamics program for modeling of ship motions and analysis of its impact on crew, equipment and cargo, as well as on the ship system's operability in the variety of sea states.
We envision a starting point in ongoing model and method development for time domain simulation e.g. in direct stability assessment, following the new intact stability code IMO/SGISC. Another part of the seakeeping analysis, anticipated for the research studies, address the motions' influence on work and mission performance at sea. This includes both modelling of the ship motions as such and how crew responds to them. In addition to numerical modeling, the project is expected to include experimental field studies in collaboration with ship crews and experts in fields such as occupational science. We also see an opportunity to study gender aspects that are sometimes addressed anecdotally in connection with seakeeping analysis but rarely scientifically explored. The perfect background is Naval Architecture with good knowledge in mechanics, hydromechanics, mathematics and programming. In addition, experience and interest in human-machine interaction and its importance for system performance and risk analysis.
