Third-cycle subject: Chemical Engineering
The battery is a key component in the electrification of the transport sector. To extend the longevity of the battery, necessary improvements in the design and control of battery systems are needed. For this, more knowledge is needed about the causes and the degree and location of aging in the cell. From experimental data in which aging is identified, localized and quantified, mathematical models can be developed that describe the processes and interactions, and also can predict further aging.
The project is a continuation of previous projects on battery aging together with the Swedish automotive industry and will in this phase focus on uneven aging and plating in larger Li- and Na-ion cells. Collaborators are Scania, AB Volvo, Volvo Cars, CEVT, Uppsala University and Chalmers, through the Swedish Electromobility Centre www.emobilitycentre.se. KTH's role is to perform advanced electrochemical characterization of components from larger commercial cells, make targeted experiments to study connections between design and cycling parameters and aging, and to develop theoretical models based on finite element methods. The research will be carried out mainly at the Department of Chemical Engineering (KET), which is active in the field of energy and the development of sustainable energy systems. Supervision: Professors Rakel Wreland Lindström and Göran Lindbergh and Dr Henrik Ekström is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here
An appropriate background is a Master's degree based on electrochemistry, chemical engineering, engineering physics and mathematical modelling. Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English and documented skills in summarizing research results in written and oral presentation is required.
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
