Third-cycle subject: Fibre and Polymer Science
Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) is a research center striving for scientific excellence, with a focus on new materials from trees. The center creates knowledge and builds competence for an innovative and sustainable future value creation from forest raw materials. WWSC is a multidisciplinary collaboration between KTH, Chalmers, and Linköping University. The base is a donation from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, and the forest industry is supporting WWSC via the national platform Treesearch.
Chemical modification of cellulose has been an active research topic since the dawn of wood science. Unfortunately, the standard strategy for the covalent chemical modification of cellulose in water is using enormous excess reactants, making the process highly unsustainable. This project addresses this challenge by unique chemistry focusing on the chemical modification of cellulose in water. The aim is to allow targeted installation of polymers, oligomers, and small molecules to cellulose substrate with water as the only reaction solvent. Beyond that, the modification should also adhere to a circular material economy where all components can be reused and recycled. The chemical modifications of cellulose will be targeted toward wood-nanotechnology for energy, transparency, and high-performance characteristics. Conclusively, this project is fundamental and explorative in structure and search for an applicant with a deep interest in Organic, Green, and Polymer Chemistry.
