Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) is a research center striving for scientific excellence, with a focus on new materials from trees. The center creates knowledge and builds competence for an innovative and sustainable future value creation from forest raw materials. WWSC is a multidisciplinary collaboration between KTH, Chalmers, and Linköping University. The base is a donation from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, and the forest industry is supporting WWSC via the national platform Treesearch.
Powerful electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices is a major challenge to our society. Wood has a hierarchical cellular structure with pronounced anisotropy, providing efficient mass transport for water and nutrients in the living tree. The hierarchically porous and low-tortuosity structure of wood offers opportunities for fluidic permeation, ionic transport, and gas desorption at the microscale and nanoscale, which are important features for making electrode materials in energy storage devices. In this project, we focus on the strategies for tailoring wood structures and conductivity of wood-based composite materials, particularly the fundamentals down to molecular level on how to build conductive paths inside pre-treated wood samples and explore the relationship between the hierarchical porous structure and the electrochemical properties. We are aiming to construct multifunctional wood-based energy storage composite materials with good electrochemical performance using simple, efficient, and environmentally friendly processes, addressing the UN Sustainability Development Goals 7 and 12.
