Third-cycle subject: Chemical science and Engineering
Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) is a research center striving for scientific excellence, with a focus on new materials from trees. The center creates knowledge and builds competence for an innovative and sustainable future value creation from forest raw materials. WWSC is a multidisciplinary collaboration between KTH, Chalmers, and Linköping University. The base is a donation from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, and the forest industry is supporting WWSC via the national platform Treesearch.
Within the WWSC, significant advances have been made in lignin biorefining, valorization and material synthesis. Well-characterized lignins have enabled fundamental studies on structure-property relationships in lignin-based materials. This proposal targets the extraction of lignin from plant cells walls with tailored chemical and physical properties, designed for specific applications. Specific functionalities inserted into lignin during extraction and post-extraction, as well as proofs of concept for applications are targeted. The characterization techniques include state-of-the art NMR, SEC, GC MS, MALDI MS and many more.
We are looking for a candidate with interests in research, curiosity driven and willing to learn new subjects of relevance to the research. We offer a pleasant working environment where the candidate will also interact with other researchers working with different aspects of lignin within the group.
Supervision: Professor Martin Lawoko is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
