Third-cycle subject: Fibre and Polymer Science
Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) is a research center striving for scientific excellence, with a focus on new materials from trees. The center creates knowledge and builds competence for an innovative and sustainable future value creation from forest raw materials. WWSC is a multidisciplinary collaboration between KTH, Chalmers, and Linköping University. The base is a donation from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, and the forest industry is supporting WWSC via the national platform Treesearch.
Managed end-of-life is a prerequisite for development of sustainable polymer materials. Some polymer products are difficult to recover and recycle and then biodegradability is an attractive property. However, it is crucial that the material will degrade in the expected end-of-life environment and that it will not release harmful compounds or persistent microplastics. Cellulose and other wood biopolymers are inherently biodegradable, but chemical modification typically reduces susceptibility to biodegradation. We will investigate how new chemical modifications influence biodegradability of wood biopolymers and develop test methodology to enable rapid screening of biodegradation potential early in the material development. This will reveal important structure-degradability relationships for development of materials with tailored degradability in targeted environment.
Supervision: Prof Minna Hakkarainen is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
We are looking for a candidate with a Master´s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Technology , Macromolecular Materials or equivalent.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here
