School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Fibre and Polymer Science

Wallenberg Wood Science Center (WWSC) is a research center striving for scientific excellence, with a focus on new materials from trees. The center creates knowledge and builds competence for an innovative and sustainable future value creation from forest raw materials. WWSC is a multidisciplinary collaboration between KTH, Chalmers, and Linköping University. The base is a donation from Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, and the forest industry is supporting WWSC via the national platform Treesearch.

This project aims to use building blocks from wood-based raw materials to produce new materials that can replace fossil-based counterparts, especially in adhesives and other applications where tailored surface properties are needed. The main focus will be on the polymerization of small molecules from wood, either as extracted or after functionalization, and characterization of the properties of the resulting materials. We strive to meet the principles of green chemistry. The work is supported by advanced lab equipment and many qualified colleagues.

We are looking for a motivated candidate who wants to be at the forefront of research and create new technology for a sustainable future based on materials from the forest.

Supervision: Prof. Eva Malmström will be the main supervisor.
