Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering
Dengue and Zika are two arboviral viruses that affect a significant portion of the world population. The principle vector species of both viruses are the mosquitoes Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. They breed in very slow-flowing or standing water pools. It is important to reduce and control such potential breeding grounds to contain the spread of these diseases.
Digital Futures https://www.digitalfutures.kth.se is supporting a project to detect the breeding places, i.e., still-standing water with mosquito larvae, in densely populated areas using drone-based images. You as a PhD student will contribute to this project by exploring and developing learning-based algorithms for multispectral aerial imagery to discover water bodies where larvae are most likely to breed. Your knowledge in machine learning, probability and information theory will allow you to develop efficient learning-based algorithms. Important aspects of this project are the accuracy of the detection and the complexity / cost of the system. Jointly with our project partners at RISE and the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, you will work in an international research environment.
