School of Engineering Sciences at KTH

Job description

As part of the multidisciplinary research environment INTERFACE, the department of Engineering Mechanics announces a postdoc position within the thematic area Advanced Computing and Machine Learning and Advanced Material and Structures, Energy on the topic of “Numerical models of interfacial fluxes”.

The purpose of the project is to attain unprecedented accuracy and efficiency in modelling heat and mass transfer in fluid flows, including interactions with solid walls and porous matrices. We will do it by devising algorithms to simulate contact line motion, wetting and phase change within one or more of the different interface tracking methods already available within the group. The objective is also to be able to efficiently run on thousands of cores and use modern accelerated architectures as GPUs.

To meet the rising global energy demand in a sustainable manner, one way is to improve phase change heat transfer, which has been the object of increasing engineering research over the last years. Phase change is the most efficient way to increase heat transfer since latent heat is typically much large than sensible heat. The recent development of micro and nanotechnologies has made the high-resolution control of surface texture and chemistry feasible over different length scales. These complex surfaces may significantly affect several multiphase processes of high practical interest, e.g., evaporation, boiling, condensation and freezing. In a field where experiments are complex, a deep understanding of the mechanisms underlying wetting and compressible multiphase flows with phase change, may therefore be achieved through high-fidelity numerical simulations.

The aim is to extend existing tools for multiscale numerical simulations of heat and mass flux in laminar and turbulent flows. The work of the post-doc will be discussed with the supervisors and be conducted in close collaboration within the groups in Fluid Mechanics at KTH as well as with established groups worldwide with which KTH already has collaborations.
