Ab initio quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods can provide very accurate results for strongly correlated electron systems, but computational costs prevent their application in the full phase diagram. This is unfortunate, as the rigorous description of degenerate electron systems is critical to the understanding of warm dense matter (WDM) occuring in giant planet interiors and inertial confinement fusion. A pre-requisite for an improved understanding of WDM is the accurate description of the uniform electron fluid, itself a formidable task.

The collaboration between KTH and CASUS, Görlitz, Germany (www.casus.science) aims to exploit state-of-the-art QMC simulations for the construction and validation of novel schemes within existing formalisms. The project focuses on the development of novel dielectric schemes and the numerical implementation of novel & existing schemes, thus providing unprecedented insights across multiple coupling / degeneracy regimes. The underlying approximations will be guided by and the predictions validated against exact QMC results by CASUS. A PhD student is sought to: develop & implement self-consistent theories of the dynamic local field correction, perform numerical calculations on modern high performance computing facilities, analyze uniform electron fluid and WDM properties, explore synergies with and get insights into QMC-methods during extended stays at CASUS.

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyse and work with complex issues.

Following skills are considered meritorious : Solid background in quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, programming skills in Python or C/C++ and basic background in the statistical description of non-ideal plasmas.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.

Information regarding admission and employment

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
