The project is aimed at theoretical and experimental study of custom optical fiber designs and fabrication techniques. Of specific focus will be hybrid optical fibers for linear and nonlinear optical transmission in the mid-infrared spectral range. These studies are expected to result in demonstrations of novel low-loss mid infrared fibers with scalable geometry and developed techniques for fiber components for the mid-infrared spectral range. The work will involve design, fabrication and experimental characterization of the custom mid-infrared fibers and components.
The fiber technologies for the mid-infrared spectral are increasingly important for applications in environmental sensing, biomedical application and development of broadband optical comb synthesizers. These optical fibers and components are made of heterogeneous materials and fabricated using custom laser-based fabrication techniques developed over recent years at KTH. The work will be mainly based using the available research fiber fabrication facility and adapting it further for specific applications.
The work will be conducted at KTH Laser Lab research infrastructure facility which offers a broad range of experimental capabilities and a stimulating collaborative research environment.
