Third-cycle subject: Transport Science
Cities and regions around the world are seeing a rapid growth accompanied with the development of mass public transport networks. One of the main challenges in planning new service lines is to determine the required service capacity. A network-wide assessment is required as the capacity needs depend on the distribution of passenger demand across the network. Smart card data offers unprecedented opportunities for identifying the network-wide crowding implications of new public transport investments.
This research project will develop a workflow to assess the crowding implications and capacity requirements induced by new urban developments. In doing so, we will capitalize on the data warehouse and analysis techniques developed by members of the Transport Planning division at KTH. Past developments enable the microscopic inference and analysis of individual journeys, which are then aggregated to support the macroscopic analysis of travel patterns across the network and their evolution and characteristics. The impact of new urban developments on the crowding levels experienced for journeys originating from or destined to different parts of the urban region will be analyzed for different kinds of development.
