Third-cycle subject: Materials Science
At the Department of Materials Science, research is underway to replace cobalt as a binder in cemented carbide on several fronts.
The project aims to combine cemented carbide with high-strength steel and thereby produce new cemented carbide grades without cobalt. The driving force is to contribute to the transition into a more sustainable society through better materials and phasing out harmful substances. To succeed, a multi-scale approach is needed where both modeling and experiments are important. The modeling will focus on the connection between structure and properties where different predictive tools will be used and developed. The experimental part will focus on characterization to validate models by imaging the materials' microstructure, e.g. with electron microscopy.
Young researchers recruited into the WISE program will be a part of the WISE Graduate School, an ambitious nationwide program of seminars, courses, research visits, and other activities to promote a strong multi-disciplinary and international network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers, and industry.

Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as doctoral students. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (max 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
