Third-cycle subject: Energy Technology
There is an exponentially increasing societal need for satellite services for communication, earth observation and research. This need requires rocket launch solutions that, with the introduction of additive manufacturing processes and reusability, contribute to more sustainable solutions and lower societal costs. Within Europe there is an ambition to develop reusable liquid-powered rockets for which the fuel and oxygen pumps are driven by one or more turbines. To be able to cost-effectively apply AM to reusable turbines, a special focus is required on the surface roughness that products manufactured with additive manufacturing methods get to avoid expensive post-processing. The overall academic goal is to add to the knowledge of the impact of AM surface roughness on pressure loss and heat transfer coefficients for flow components in rotating flow machines.
This research project is in collaboration with industry and is financed by the Swedish National Space Agency.
Supervision: Docent Jens Fridh is proposed as supervisor and Dr. Mauricio Gutierrez Salas as co-supervisor to the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
Completed coursework or course modules in engineering thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer are required. Knowledge of surface roughness measurements of additively manufactured products is a merit.
In addition to the above, a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed on their ability to:
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
