Third-cycle subject: Chemical engineering
Batteries play an increasingly important role as primary energy storage in vehicles. Current battery packs however suffer from inhomogeneous aging due to uneven load of individual cells. Depending on where in the circuit a certain cell is located, the average current through that cell may differ from its neighbours. This leads to differences in state of charge and, in the long term, state of health. It is also difficult to estimate the internal states of individual cells because they cannot be tested in isolation from the rest of the system.
A possible solution to the above problems is to split the battery pack into smaller modules which can be individually connected or disconnected. Such a system offers new possibilities to drive the system to advantageous operating points, as well as increased ability to accurately estimate system states. However, such a topology also increases the system's complexity. It is therefore necessary to develop novel control strategies to be able to use the modular battery system to its full extent.
The doctoral project is aimed at developing models that can describe inhomogeneities in battery cells and modules. An important aspect is also the identification of model parameters and experimental validation of the models. The project is a collaboration with Scania CV AB and Linköping University.
Supervision: Göran Lindbergh is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission.
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
A suitable background is a degree in chemical engineering, technical chemistry, engineering physics, electrical engineering, energy engineering or equivalent.
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
You will find contact information for union representatives on KTH's website.
You will find contact information for doctoral section on the section's website.
