School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health at KTH

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Technology and Health

Technology is becoming more and more important within sports as we are constantly trying to push the boundaries of what is currently possible. This also includes technologies related to sensor systems and computer science used to analyze sports activities for various purposes at all levels of sporting from elite level down to grass-root organized and spontaneous youth sporting, including parasport.

In this project, the aim is to investigate the potential of using consumer hardware, in combination with machine learning techniques, to enable advanced in-field and real-time tracking and analysis of human body movements. The main goal is to develop and evaluate end-to-end technical solutions that utilize off-the-shelf wearable sensors and mobile cameras, to give important new insights in sports, such as for sports performance, injury prevention, and equipment evaluation. The research will entail the entire software process, including user experience, to develop and evaluate efficient tools that can be used in-field by athletes and coaches at all levels.

The work will be carried out in close collaboration with our partners at the Swedish National Sports Confederation, Swedish Olympic Committee, and our new KTH Center for Sports Engineering.

Supervision: Associate Professor Martin Jacobsson and Lecturer Jonas Willén is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
