Third-cycle subject: Chemistry
Fluorinated surfactants, which pertain to the group of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are recognized as highly persistent and environmentally bioaccumulative compounds with adverse health effects. Owing to their widespread use and exceptional chemical and thermal stability, PFAS contaminants can be found in almost all sources of water worldwide, including drinking water, as conventional water treatment methods cannot remove them effectively. At present, the most promising technologies that target fluorinated surfactants are based on adsorption approaches. However, the molecular understanding of the adsorption of fluorinated surfactants and the characterization of their adsorbed structures, both necessary to gain further mechanistic insights and develop improved treatment technologies, are surprisingly poor.
This project aims to improve the knowledge base of PFAS adsorption mechanisms by investigating the molecular features of adsorbed fluorosurfactants and related compounds on surfaces of relevance to currently proposed and future technological solutions. Specific molecular information from the interfacial region will be obtained using advanced techniques, including vibrational sum frequency, total internal reflection Raman, and F-19 NMR spectroscopies, all available at our state of the art facilities. The candidate will also be expected to develop a deep understanding of these methods and adapt them to address the specifics of the target materials.
Supervision: Prof. Eric Tyrode and Prof. István Furó is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6, read more here
In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:
Experience with vibrational spectroscopy and/or NMR spectroscopy is a merit.
After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal competency.
Target degree: Doctoral degree
Only those admitted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total length of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education in four years ' time. An employed doctoral student can, to a limited extent (maximum 20%), perform certain tasks within their role, e.g. training and administration. A new position as a doctoral student is for a maximum of one year, and then the employment may be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time. In the case of studies that are to be completed with a licentiate degree, the total period of employment may not be longer than what corresponds to full-time doctoral education for two years.
You will find contact information for union representatives on KTH's website.
You will find contact information for doctoral section on the section's website.
