School of Industrial Engineering and Management at KTH

Job description

We offer a postdoc position for two years. The postdoc candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of mathematical models for the simulation of the heat transfer process in shallow geothermal systems for heating and cooling of buildings. The research will include both physical modeling as well as data-driven modelling approaches based on machine learning. The objective is the development of predictive models suitable to inform the operations of a controller for geothermal applications.

The work is part of an international project funded by GEOTHERMICA Era-Net, in cooperation with the network Joint Programming Platform Smart Energy Systems. The overall goal of this international project is the development and testing of an innovative controller device to improve the operation of borehole fields coupled with heat pumps, thereby reducing their energy consumption, costs, and CO2 emissions, and take advantage of the full potential of the technology.

The postdoctoral duties include:

  • Development of detailed physics-based mathematical model of heat transfer in shallow geothermal systems.
  • Development of surrogate models capturing the dynamics of the geothermal system using machine learning.
  • Analysis of the operational data of a full-scale demo-site before and after the installation of an innovative control device.
  • Writing scientific papers and technical reports.
  • Actively contribute to the research group activities.

What we offer

  • A position at a leading technical university that generates knowledge and skills for a sustainable future
  • Engaged and ambitious colleagues along with a creative, international and dynamic working environment
  • Work in Stockholm, in close proximity to nature
  • Help to relocate and be settled in Sweden and at KTH
